Ford has officially unveiled the Ka Concept in Brazil, the new global compact car platform which will power cars like the next gen Figo and the Figo sedan. We have brought to you the spy images of the Ka hatch and the sedan based on it from time to time, and the new concept reaffirms our belief that this vehicle is indeed the same as pictured in the spy pictures.
The new Ka Concept lays foundation for Ford’s new global compact car platform. It envisions a robust, cleverly designed and fuel-efficient new compact car for urban customers in the developing world – specifically for Brazil and South Asia (read India). The new concept will boast striking form, adorning the brand new Ford design language, great engine options and up to date technology to boot. As seen on the Ecosport, the car will also democratize features in the basic segment which were earlier seen only on cars in the higher segment.
While the new car may look small from the outside, Ford claims that it will be proper 5-seater. The Ka Concept will have to be packaged really well if that goal has to be attained. While we don’t know anything about the dimensions yet, accommodating 5 grown adults in the compact shell would be an uphill task.
Also, if it has to be the next gen Figo, we would much rather have the quarter panel on the rear window added to this design – a feature which made the Figo feel really airy and spacious. For the India bound Figo, the Ka Concept will really have to grow in length if it has to stay true to the high standards set by the current gen Figo as regards space.
The Ka Concept will be an affordable, economical car and will be positioned in the segment where cars like the Swift and Brio currently reside. According to Ford’s official release “Ka Concept expands Ford’s portfolio of compact car offerings. The vehicle strategically positions the company to address global demand for sub-B compact vehicles on the back of surging demand from urban consumers in developing countries.”
The new car based on the Ka Concept will launch in 2014. In India the next gen Figo concept will be showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo. Designed with many features normally reserved for more expensive vehicles, it offers class-leading fuel economy, a roomy interior with comfortable seating for five, best-in-class air conditioning, and a host of useful technologies such as a central docking station for mobile devices and Ford SYNC. The Ka Concept is the second vehicle developed by Ford Brazil following the highly successful EcoSport compact utility.
From a design standpoint, the Ka Concept offers global Ford design cues including the trapezoidal front grille and detailed surface lines. The raked hood, the bold, elongated headlamps, the sweeping, curved lines create a sense of dynamism. The roofline rises from the rear to the trunk lid, where a spoiler, pronounced lines and large taillamps add a strong visual element.
In terms of engines, expect the Ka Concept based new Figo to sport a 1.0 Ecoboost petrol engine and the 1.5 TDCi diesel. As of now we don’t expect an automatic transmission on the new gen Figo.
More details on the next gen Figo and the Figo sedan should start emerging now since the base car has been revealed. Stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, do let us know whether you liked the design of the new concept – doe you think this design has more appeal over other hatchbacks in the segment?
