Maruti YRA hatchback

Upcoming cars 2015 Maruti Suzuki YRA

What is it?

To be positioned above the Swift in the Maruti food chain, the new Maruti YRA premium hatchback will lock horns with the newly launched Hyundai Elite i20. The car gets completely new styling all around, with the front getting an unique U-shaped grille unlike any other Maruti we’ve ever seen. The head-lamps bear a striking resemblance to the ones on the Swift though, while the mildly aggressive front bumper packs a couple of vertically placed DRL strips. The waistline is high-set, while the rear windscreen is quite raked and swooping, and the whole posterior of the YRA somehow reminds one of the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback. Apart from that, the top-end  YRA will come with LED infused tail lights, 15 inch, multi spoke alloy wheels, chromed door handles, chrome trimmings below the windows and the rear windscreen, while the basic versions seem to skip these aforementioned exterior embellishments.

The interiors have been party spied too and this is where Maruti has become a little adventurous, with all the funky looking elements and the touch-screen infotainment system. The instrumentation looks cool, with blue lighting and a driver information display nestled between the dials. The top-end variants will also get automatic climate control, reverse parking sensors, ABS, ESP and dual front airbags as part of standard kit. The Smart Play infotainment system from the Ciaz could also be offered on the YRA premium hatch in India.

Power-train

The Maruti Suzuki YRA should finish under 4 meters and get the same 1.2-liter petrol and 1.3-liter diesel engines from the Swift. The European versions should get a 1.4 liter petrol motor. The YRA is expected to make its Indian debut sometime early next year, possible ahead of its European debut.

The car also has a hint of aluminum on the side skirts, chrome door handles, ORVMs on the side rear view mirrors, and a dash of chrome on the rub-strip.

Power-train

For the Indian market, we expect Maruti Suzuki to persist with the K14 1.4 liter petrol engine powering the Ertiga and the Ciaz with 90bhp or thereabouts on tap, depending on the state of tune. While the car is available in the European market with a 1.6 liter diesel, for India it would be propelled by a 1.3 liter oil burner with VGT turbo. This unit, again, is the same as the one found under the bonnets of the Ciaz and the Ertiga.

Mahindra S101

What is it?

Driven by miserable sales of the Quanto – a hasty, half-baked effort to grab a chunk of the sub-4 meter compact SUV pie, Mahindra will be back again with all guns blazing in 2015 with fresh, well-rounded SUVs.  The crux of attention will be on the new sub 4 meter compact SUV, codenamed the S101. The car will go head to head with Ford’s hot-selling Ecosport. Although there have been numerous sightings of the S101 prototype, camouflaging has been heavy and stylistic details are scratchy at best.

Power-train

Mahindra XUV500 Hybrid

Upcoming cars 2015 Mahindra XUV500 HYbrid

What is it?

Soon hybrid technology will start making its presence felt in the lower end of the market. The Mahindra XUV500 Hybrid is one such car that’ll face the hybrid bandwagon.  The manufacturer claims that the new XUV500 Diesel Hybrid is as much as 18 percent more fuel efficient than the regular diesel powered variant.

What is it?

Set for a Korean launch by January 2015, the all-new Ssanyong Tivoli (initially code-named the X100) B-segment crossover will go on sale in the UK and globally from mid-next year. Together with its name, SsangYong has also revealed the latest rendered images of the car’s exterior and interior. Its styling picks a leaf from the two new Ssangyong Concepts showcased at this year’s Paris Auto Show – the XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure. The fascia looks fresh, the sides are pretty muscular, but the rear didn’t go down too well with us.

Power-train

Other engines would include a 1.6-liter four cylinder normally aspirated petrol and the highly acclaimed 1.5-liter K9K turbo diesel engine.

All-New-Mitsubishi-ASX

What is it?

In a bid to bolster product sales in India and other emerging international markets, the reeling Japanese manufacturer has coined the ‘New Stage 2016′ strategy. In India, the freshly launched Pajero Sport 4×2 Automatic is a part of that strategy, and will be followed by a couple of brand new SUVs in 2015. In terms of pricing and size, the existing Pajero Sport will be sandwiched by the oncoming couple.

For the next two to three years, Mitsubishi India’s focus will be only on the SUV segment. The company will also look at entering the passenger car segment after two to three years. Apart from that, the Japanese automaker is set to expand its dealership reach across the country, by more than 50 % in the next few months. By March 2015, the automaker plans to have 48 dealerships in place around India, up from the current number of 31.

Although details about the forthcoming SUVs haven’t been revealed yet, the smaller one could be the ASX (pictured above), previewed as the Concept-cX at the Frankfurt motor show in 2007  Although Mitsubishi has a long history of SUVs, this is the first time it has produced one that can be classed as a crossover, having smaller, hatchback-like dimensions- perfect for India with a little tweaking all around. The front-wheel drive 1.8-litre diesel is likely to be the most popular of the lot, although four-wheel drive and a 1.6-litre petrol engine are also offered. The other SUV could be the new face-lifted 2015 Pajero, for all you know- Watch this space.

2016-Volvo-XC90-11

What is it?

The 2015 Volvo XC90 SUV is the current flagship of the Swedish manufacturer’s range. The new Volvo XC90 SUV rides on the new Scalable Product Architecture Platform ( SPA ) from Volvo. The SPA has been undergoing development for the last four years, and will underpin a number of upcoming models from Volvo. According to the company, the SPA is very flexible and dynamic. Dimensions of the SPA can be changed to produce differing vehicle types like sedans, SUVs or Crossovers, thus reducing developing costs in the future.

Volvo officials have confirmed that the new XC90 will be launched in India in the middle of 2015, although customers will have to wait till August for the deliveries to commence. The first 200 units for India will be the top-spec variants (available in 2-3 colors), though more variants will be offered at a later stage at a lower price.

Power-train:

The XC90 will be available in the Indian market with Volvo’s latest 2.0 liter, four-cylinder diesel mill which churns out 245 bhp and 470 NM of torque. This engine belongs to the new Drive E engine family that has fuel efficiency and low carbon emissions as its key attributes. The power and torque figures are an improvement over the outgoing which uses the 2.4-liter, five-cylinder oil burner. The other engines on offer are : the 190 hp and 400 Nm strong D4 diesel, the T5 petrol four-cylinder with 254 hp and 350 Nm and T6 with turbo and supercharger which now delivers 320 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. The new XC90 will also be more frugal than the model it replaces due to the use of an eight-speed gearbox instead of the six-speed automatic. The XC90 sold in India will come with an all-wheel drive system. There is a low probability that Volvo will also launch the petrol variant of the XC90.

The MPV will also sport a newer front-fascia with a different grille, differently designed headlamps, a different set of bumpers and tail-lights. The 2016 Innova also seems to have grown in a few aspects. The car is definitely longer and wider than the current iteration and the roofline has come down a wee bit, too. The increase in length and width means that the 2016 Toyota Innova could be marginally better in terms of interior space than the current model.

Ferrari/Maserati

Ferrari Maserati

What is it?

For 2015, the biggest story in this section is the official India re-entry of Ferrari and Maserati. The Fiat Chrysler Group, owner of the two hallowed Italian marques, is keen to set up Ferrari and Maserati shops back in India as it sees a great opportunity in the higher-end niche car segment in India, which, incidentally is seeing a slow decline due to rising import duty.

Following the opening of a national sales company, Maserati plans to start selling its range of cars in India, which include the Ghibli, Quattroporte and the GranTurismo for now, from the second half of 2015. The range will be joined next year with a luxury crossover and the stunning Alfieri Coupe.

On the other hand, Ferrari’s Indian operations will be managed by the group’s base in Dubai, and plans are being finalized about the new, upcoming outlets in Delhi and Mumbai. If all goes well, Ferrari should see its Indian come-back in the first quarter of 2015 with cars like the California T convertible, FF, 458 Italia/Spider, and the F12 Berlinetta. The LaFerrari, of course, is all sold out!

  • Expected launch: mid-2015 (Maserati), early 2015 (Ferrari)

Porsche 911 Targa

But, unlike the classic models, the roof segment of the new Targa can be opened and closed at the push of a button. When the button is pressed, the fully automatic system stows the roof top behind the rear seats, providing a real spectacle.

Power-train:

As with the prior model, the new Targa comes in two versions available exclusively with all-wheel drive. A seven-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard. The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a 3.4-litre, 350 hp (257 kW) flat-six engine. Equipped with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch transmission and Sport Chrono Package, this model can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 175 mph. Fuel consumption on the NEDC is between 29.7 mpg and 32.5 mpg Combined, depending on transmission, which corresponds to CO2 emissions between 223 and 204 g/km.

The top model is the 911 Targa 4S, which delivers 400 hp (294 kW) from a displacement of 3.8 litres. This model reaches a top speed of 184 mph and, with the PDK and Sport Chrono package options specified, is able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds. Fuel consumption on the NEDC is between 28.2 mpg and 30.7 mpg, depending on transmission, which corresponds to CO2 between 237 and 214 g/km.

Porsche Cayman/Boxster GTS

Porsche-Boxster-GTS-and-Cayman-GTS

What is it?

The GTS trim sharpens up the Boxster and Cayman range, featuring a slightly more powerful engine, a new body kit, new 20 inch Carrera S alloys, new Bi-Xenon headlights, and new sports exhaust system over the vanilla Cayman/Boxster. The car is longer than their standard counterparts by 1.2 inches and the new sport suspensions allows the Cayman/Boxster GTS to have a 20mm lower ride height.

Power-train:

The engine now produces 340 hp, and can achieve a 0- 100 kph in 4.6 seconds. Both are now capable of a top speed of 285 kph which it did not reach on the track, however, watching that red car go around a narrow piece of tarmac, sliding it’s rear wheels, affirms that the world is a curve and Porsche is out to play. The Cayman GTS, however will have that very slight dynamic edge over the Boxster, due to its fixed roof

  • Expected launch: mid-2015
  • Expected price: 1.5 crores INR

New 2016 Audi R8

Audi R8 V10 Plus review (84)

What is it?

The second generation of Audi’s flagship sports car, the R8 will make its international debut next year, followed by an India launch. The new gen model will follow the basic design template of its forebear, though with a more angular theme. In its newest avatar, expect the R8 to be sharper, sexier and even more powerful. The next-gen R8 will again use a mid-engine platform, which it will share with the Lamborghini Gallardo’s replacement. The new car would also be lighter, thanks to the introduction of lighter components in the chassis.

Power-train

There isn’t complete clarity on the engines for the new car. We expect a twin-turbo V-8 and a naturally aspirated V-10 as the leading engine options. There could also be a plug-in hybrid version.  S-tronic seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will handle the transmission duties.

  • Expected Launch: Late 2015
  • Expected Price: 1.8 – 2.4 crore
  • Rivals:  Lamborghini Gallardo, Jaguar F-Type V8

BMW i8

BMW at Pebble Beach 2014-i8-6

What is it?

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid hi-performance sports car with fuel consumption and emission levels of a city car. The i8’s construction involves a carbon fibre capsule bolted on an aluminum/magnesium chassis. However, the drive train is a nod to the future- a 3 cylinder turbo-charged engine driving the rear wheels and an electric motor at the front. The car is designed from scratch -a proof of BMW technological excellence and a firm answer to ambitious new players in the automotive business, like Tesla.

Power-train

The BMW i8 features two engines, and an electric motor on the front capable of 131hp and 250Nm (the same used on the i3) and a three cylinder, direct injection, 1500 cc turbo at the rear capable of 231 hp of power and 320 Nm of twist. Combined power output stands at 362 bhp. Performance figures are impressive, with a 250km/h top speed and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds.

  • Expected launch: Early 2015
  • Expected price: 1.55-2.0 crore
  • Rivals: Jaguar F-Type coupe, Audi R8 (actually none)

Mercedes-AMG GT

Mercedes AMG GT

What is it?

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S both share the same underpinnings as the outgoing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, but that’s where the similarities end. Though base GT models come with passive dampers and a mechanical limited-slip differential, the GT S models come with electronically controlled dampers and an electronically controlled limited slip diff.

Power-train

Riding on a 2-inch-shorter wheelbase and utilizing an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, the AMG GT produces 462 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. The AMG GT S, meanwhile, ups the ante to 510 PS and 650 Nm, making it capable of doing the 0-100kmph dash in just 3.7 seconds, and onto an electronically restricted top speed of 310 kmph.

  • Expected Launch: Mid 2015
  • Expected Price: Rs 2 crore
  • Rivals: Porsche 911, Porsche 911 Turbo

DC Avanti

dc-design-avanti-images-expo- (2)

What is it?

Laying claim to being India’s first sportscar, the Dilip Chhabria-designed DC Avanti is finally ready for sale. DC plans to build 200 cars next year, hoping to raise output to 2000 cars the year after. A Honda-sourced V6 version is also in the works, so stay tuned.

Power-train

Powered by a mid-mounted Ford-sourced, 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 265 PS and 251 Nm, the Avanti is good enough for a 0-100 time of 7.7 seconds. Not much for a sportscar that looks like a cross between a Ferrari 458 Italia and a Lamborghini Gallardo, but certainly commendable for an indigenous machine.

  • Expected Launch: Early 2015
  • Expected Price: 30-35 lakh
  • Rivals: Pretty much none, at this price range

Jaguar F-Type AWD/manual

Jaguar F-Type AWD

What is it?

Jaguar’s mind-bendingly beautiful F-Type will be getting a host of new options for 2015, top of which is the all-wheel drive version, and a manual tranny. The F-Type will also be the first jag to get electric power steering.

Power-train

Unfortunately, the manual will be available only with the supercharged V6 engine option. From next year onwards, all V8 F-Types will come standard with AWD, including the V8 R Coupe. The F-Type Roadster also receives AWD, but the V8 S Roadster will now be replaced by a V8 R Roadster. That means all V8 F-Types are now powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making 560PS and 680Nm, sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic.

  • Expected Launch: Late 2015
  • Expected Price: 1.5-1.8 crore
  • Rivals: Porsche 911, Audi R8

The classic TT shape has been retained and the new model is clearly identifiable as an evolution of the legendary nameplate. Use of modern materials has shaved off 90 kg from the car’s weight, making it quicker and more agile.

Power-train

Petrol power comes from a 2.0 liter TFSI motor with 230PS of power and 370 Nm of torque. There’s also the 2.0 liter diesel with 184 PS
