It has emerged that Maruti Alto sales have crossed the cumulative 25 lakh mark (2.5 million). The Alto brand of cars was introduced in India way back at the commencement of the new millennium, when the car was brought to India in both an 800cc and a 1.1 litre engine variant. Since then, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), the nation’s largest selling car maker has sold more than 25 lakhs units of this model in Indian and export markets. Currently, the Alto brand comprises of two models in India — the Maruti Alto 800 and the Maruti Alto K10.

So far, in Indian car industry, only one other model has achieved this sales success- The Maruti 800!

Only some years after the launch of the Alto in India, the 1.1 litre variant was discontinued, owing to the car eating into sales of its other Maruti models. However, in 2010, the car maker launched the Maruti Alto K10, a 1000cc variant powered by the AStar‘s motor, in the country. In less than four years, this engine variant has sold more than four lakh units, thus adding to the car maker’s success. After almost twelve years of the Alto’s launch in India, the car was re-introduced with a comprehensive cosmetic makeover. Called as the Maruti Alto 800, the car is based on the same platform and is powered by a slightly re-tuned motor. Such was the response to this new car that it managed to sell around 100,000 units in just four months of its launch.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has so far exported 2.85 lakh units of the Alto. All of this helped the car to re-claim its title of “world’s best selling small car” from the Volkswagen Gol in 2013.

Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Alto is being sold in as many as 8 variants, with prices starting from as low as INR 2.41 lakhs. It is being expected that MSIL would launch a comprehensively updated Alto K10 in January 2015, with the car getting a K10B engine mated to the famed Automated Manual Transmission available in Celerio.
