Eager for a large bite of the sub-compact pie, Tata will launch the all-new Kite hatchback next year. Maruti YRA hatchback

For a complete set of clear spy pictures and details of the Maruti YRA hatchback, click here

What is it?

To be positioned above the Swift in the Maruti food chain, the new Maruti YRA premium hatchback will lock horns with the newly launched Hyundai Elite i20. The car gets completely new styling all around, with the front getting an unique U-shaped grille unlike any other Maruti we’ve ever seen. The head-lamps bear a striking resemblance to the ones on the Swift though, while the mildly aggressive front bumper packs a couple of vertically placed DRL strips. The waistline is high-set, while the rear windscreen is quite raked and swooping, and the whole posterior of the YRA somehow reminds one of the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback. Apart from that, the top-end  YRA will come with LED infused tail lights, 15 inch, multi spoke alloy wheels, chromed door handles, chrome trimmings below the windows and the rear windscreen, while the basic versions seem to skip these aforementioned exterior embellishments.

The interiors have been party spied too and this is where Maruti has become a little adventurous, with all the funky looking elements and the touch-screen infotainment system. The instrumentation looks cool, with blue lighting and a driver information display nestled between the dials. The top-end variants will also get automatic climate control, reverse parking sensors, ABS, ESP and dual front airbags as part of standard kit. The Smart Play infotainment system from the Ciaz could also be offered on the YRA premium hatch in India.

The Maruti Suzuki YRA should finish under 4 meters and get the same 1.2-liter petrol and 1.3-liter diesel engines from the Swift. The European versions should get a 1.4 liter petrol motor. The YRA is expected to make its Indian debut sometime early next year, possible ahead of its European debut.

What is it?

The S Cross will be a SX4 (now defunct) based cross-over to take on the likes of the segment leading Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and Nissan Terrano. The new S-Cross rides higher than the SX4, on newly designed alloy wheels, has a faux skid plate, new fog lamp inserts and a revised grille. The car also has a hint of aluminum on the side skirts, chrome door handles, ORVMs on the side rear view mirrors, and a dash of chrome on the rub-strip.

For the Indian market, we expect Maruti Suzuki to persist with the K14 1.4 liter petrol engine powering the Ertiga and the Ciaz with 90bhp or thereabouts on tap, depending on the state of tune. While the car is available in the European market with a 1.6 liter diesel, for India it would be propelled by a 1.3 liter oil burner with VGT turbo. This unit, again, is the same as the one found under the bonnets of the Ciaz and the Ertiga.

Expected launch: January 2015

Expected price:  7-9 lakhs INR

Fiat Punto/Avventura Abarth

Fiat Punto Abarth

For spy pics of the Fiat Punto Abarth in India, click here

What is it?

After having launched the Punto Evo in India, which by itself is a very desirable car for the segment, Fiat may be looking at launching the Punto Abarth. A go-faster version of the Punto, the Abarth would be powered by an engine that would put every other hatchback in and around its segment to shame. Some examples of the Punto Abarth EssEsse variant have been caught testing in India. A powerful engine, bigger 17 inch wheels, better equipment, some changes made to the interior and of course a re-tuned suspension for sharper handling would differentiate the Punto Abarth from its vanilla sibling. Abarth branding with some sporty stickering will be the big differentiators. Apart from that, we hear that an India-specific Avventura Abarth is on the cards too!

The Fiat Punto Abarth Evo is expected to be powered by a 1.4 Litre T-Jet turbo petrol motor that has a max power output of 114 Bhp and a peak torque figure of 207 Nm. The Punto Abarth is expected to have a top whack of more than 200kmph and a 0-100 Kmph timing of less than 8 seconds. The motor is expected to be mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox.
