After several speculations, there is finally some concrete news about the much anticipated next-generation Yamaha YZF-R15 and the word comes directly from the horse’s mouth. In an interview to Financial Express, Yamaha Motor Research & Development India Managing Director, Yasuo Ishihara has confirmed that the upcoming Yamaha YZF-R15 ‘will be a step-up from the current generation in all aspects of performance and safety’.

Ishihara said, “In the sports commuter segment, our customers are gradually increasing. And that is particularly to attract a younger audience. Our direction would be towards the fact that whoever buys the next R15, like the R3, they should be able to enjoy the bike more than anything else.”
He further added, “The R15 will become better in its next iteration, however, no details can be shared as to what would exactly the specifications be like, but we can assure that it will be a step-up from the current generation in all aspects of performance and safety. We also want to extract as much as possible from a motorcycle to give maximum value-for-money for our products.”
Ishihara remained tight-lipped about the performance numbers and the expected launch date. The current generation Yamaha YZF-R15 draws power from a 149.8cc, SOHC, 4 Valve engine that delivers 17PS of power and 15Nm of torque and comes mated to a six-speed gearbox. On the safety front, the upcoming YZF-R15 will also benefit from ABS. The ABS bit was expected as the upcoming norms would make it mandatory on motorcycles from 2017 onward. The added features would push the prices relatively higher.
