Following Yamaha Japan’s recall of 15,072 units of the R25, MT25, R3 and MT320, Yamaha India too has initiated the recall of the YZF-R3. A total of 902 motorcycles are affected by this recall. The affected motorcycles suffer from a defective clutch pressure plate and oil pump assembly. The said parts would be replaced free of cost. This is a voluntary recall and, as suggested by the two-wheeler maker, there have been no complains from the YZF-R3 owners in India.

According to the statement published by Yamaha Japan, the oil pump of the engine plunger is said to have an faulty design due to which the prime mover may not function properly. Moreover, in the power transmission device, the strength of the bearing of the clutch pressure plate is insufficient. Clutch operation may damage the said bearings which is likely to render the motorcycle nonoperational.

Yamaha India said in a statement, “The YZF-R3 is an iconic bike and has been very successful in India. However, the parent company Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., Japan, has determined that a defect, which relates to Clutch Pressure Plate assy & Oil Pump assy malfunction, exists in few YZF-R3 motorcycles falling within certain production numbers. Although no safety issues have been reported from anywhere in India, Yamaha as a responsible corporate has decided to recall all the vehicles falling under the identified production numbers. A total of 902 bikes will be recalled in India under Yamaha’s factory modification campaign, where the affected motorcycles’ defected parts will be replaced with a modified one on ‘Free of cost’ basis at Yamaha authorized dealers.”
