It has been almost a year since it first emerged that the Volkswagen XL1’s diesel hybrid technology is on its way to the new Up! hatchback. Now we have come to know that the Up! diesel hybrid might be launched as soon as in late 2013 and the car is looking ready to become the world’s first ever small car to have a diesel-electric powerplant.

At present, the only diesel hybrid cars on sale are the Peugeot 3008, Peugeot 508 and the Volvo V70.

The Up! hybrid will get the XL1’s 800cc TDI turbo diesel engine mated to a 27 Bhp electric motor that will be placed in the front. It is expected that the car could have an astonishing fuel economy figure of 40 Kmpl. The diesel electric hybrid will power the front wheels and the car will have its battery pack placed in the boot. The hybrid powerplant will be mated to a 7 speed DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox.

Volkswagen might also come up with a diesel-only variant of the Up! hatchback with the car being powered by the 800cc TDI turbo diesel engine. The VW Up! diesel variant might be equipped with start-stop system, brake energy regeneration and low rolling resistance to have a stellar economy figure.
