Ever since the last-generation Toyota Supra said its final goodbyes with a whoosh and a hiss from its famed, blown 2JZ inline-six motor way back in 2002, we’ve been wanting a new one. Well, after rumours, its now confirmed that the iconic moniker is set to be rekindled soon. The new Toyota Supra will arrive in 2018, shortly after the BMW Z5 with which it will be closely related to, as BMW and Toyota have been jointly working on the models since 2012. While the Supra would sit above the GT86 sports car in the Japanese manufacturer’s portfolio, its appearance will take direct inspiration from the FT-1 concept from the 2014 Detroit Motor Show.

Upon launch, the new Supra would be Toyota’s mainstream sports car flagship. It will be considerably more expensive than the GT86, considering the relatively complex drive-train and high-tech construction. For starters, it’ll feature a hybrid drive-train with all-wheel-drive, incorporating a BMW petrol engine and electric motors whose energy will be stored in super capacitors. The new Supra’s construction will be carbon fibre rich, and BMW will put its expertise into it, while the platform will be shared with the upcoming Z5, even though both cars will be positioned differently. The next-generation Supra will be manufactured in US or Europe, unlike its predecessor, which was exclusively made in Japan.
