After it was withdrawn from the market in late 2013 due to insufficient demand and a segment obliterated by premium SUVs, Honda has plans to re-introduce the Accord sedan in India. Interestingly, the premium sedan is due for an upgrade in international markets and it could well be the facelifted Accord that could come our way.
While a diesel or a V6 are difficult to come by, the new Honda Accord for India could be powered by a 2.4-liter 4 cylinder engine with both auto and manual gearbox options, wherein a hybrid variant could be added later. If it is the facelifted Accord that makes its way to India, it will be an athletic looking sedan, which might appear more compact than its predecessor due to slightly shorter dimensions. However, space on the inside will be as good, if not better than the older car.
A brand that once enjoyed repute as a premium car maker in India, Honda has been rather busy concentrating at the hatchback, MPV and entry-level sedan segments. Products like the CR-V lost out to latecomers like the Fortuner, for the sole reason that it still doesn’t come with a diesel option. If it does arrive next year, it will be interesting to see if the Honda Accord can lure away some of the buyers who still queue up to buy that butch looking SUV, or have been smitten by entry-level products from Germany.
