At the ongoing New York Auto Show, VW has showcased four new concepts for its iconic Beetle. The quartet of these concepts comprises two coupes and two cabriolets. The near-production concept cars bring funky, aspirational themes to production reality for an off-beat, distinct attitude. Here’s what we know about these bug shaped concepts with a twist
Beetle Cabriolet Denim concept.
The Beetle Cabriolet Concept has Blue as it central theme. The car has Stonewashed Blue Metallic as its main body colour with soft top in dark blue with a distinct texture for its fabric. The car is inspired by one of the most timeless and popular modern clothing items: jeans. The first Jeans inspired Beetle made its appearance in the mid-1970s, adopting the denim theme. A few others with a similar theme followed in the 80s and the 90s. The Cabriolet Denim Concept is the 21st century version of Beetle’s homage to one of the most iconic form of trousers.
The model being presented in New York is powered by a 170 PS 1.8 TSI engine (US version); if the car goes into production, other engine versions are conceivable for different markets. The appearance of the Beetle Cabriolet is accentuated by 18-inch “Disc” alloy wheels with a large chrome cap in the middle.
Beetle Wave concept
The Wave Concept is finished in striking ‘Habanero Orange Metallic’ (a very hot chilli peppe) which reflects the American spirit on the East and West coast beaches of the USA. This spirit is also expressed in the convertible’s interior. Fabric patterns from the 1950s and 60s influence the design of the centre seat panels, and there is a genuine wood dashpad designed in traditional surfboard style.
Designed in wood is the integrated “Beetle” logo. Some highly coveted surfboard brands use genuine wood; the Beetle Cabriolet Wave adopts this idea and transfers the association to high-end surfboards to the interior via the dashpad.
Beetle Pink Edition
The Beetle Pink Edition is for the fashionistas who want their ride to exude feminism with great style. Pink has traditionally been one of the most representative hues for the style-conscious females across the globe. From Japan to the US of A pink defines feminine grace and is the most used color by the most revered fashion brands. The Beetle Pink Edition is here in a coupe shape and draped in ‘Fuschine Metallic’ shade to match the most exclusive accessories those stylish ladies may be wearing. The bright pink body colour contrasts with exterior and interior elements in black, chrome and aluminium look.
Beetle R-Line Concept
The R-line lends itself to the performance enthusiasts. Powered by a 2.0-litre TSI engine in the Euro spec version, the car boast 220 PS of power with an equally sporty exterior look. Exterior is painted in ‘Oryx White Pearl Effect’. The car has independent bumpers and wrap-around body panelling in high-gloss black as its highlights along with a black diffuser and a large rear spoiler. Sporty intents of the variant are made even more evident inside with sport bucket seats and leather-carbon look highlights.
