Volkswagen Beetle Concept-Cars

At the ongoing New York Auto Show, VW has showcased four new concepts for its iconic Beetle.  The quartet of these concepts comprises two coupes and two cabriolets. The near-production concept cars bring funky, aspirational themes to production reality for an off-beat, distinct attitude. Here’s what we know about these bug shaped concepts with a twist

The Beetle Cabriolet Concept has Blue as it central theme. The car has Stonewashed Blue Metallic as its main body colour with soft top in dark blue with a distinct texture for its fabric. The car is inspired by one of the most timeless and popular modern clothing items: jeans. The first Jeans inspired Beetle made its appearance in the mid-1970s, adopting the denim theme. A few others with a similar theme followed in the 80s and the 90s. The Cabriolet Denim Concept is the 21st century version of Beetle’s homage to one of the most iconic form of trousers.

The model being presented in New York is powered by a 170 PS 1.8 TSI engine (US version); if the car goes into production, other engine versions are conceivable for different markets. The appearance of the Beetle Cabriolet is accentuated by 18-inch “Disc” alloy wheels with a large chrome cap in the middle.

The Wave Concept is finished in striking ‘Habanero Orange Metallic’ (a very hot chilli peppe) which reflects the American spirit on the East and West coast beaches of the USA. This spirit is also expressed in the convertible’s interior. Fabric patterns from the 1950s and 60s influence the design of the centre seat panels, and there is a genuine wood dashpad designed in traditional surfboard style.

Designed in wood is the integrated “Beetle” logo. Some highly coveted surfboard brands use genuine wood; the Beetle Cabriolet Wave adopts this idea and transfers the association to high-end surfboards to the interior via the dashpad.
