The new Fiat 500S is for those who’d prefer something mildly sporty, rather than break their teeth in the hardcore 595 Abarth. The exteriors of the new 500S are designed to convey just that, with new sports bumpers front and rear, side skirts and a rear spoiler, while the door handles, tailgate, “moustache”, mirror fairings and 15-inch alloy wheels are finished in exclusive “Satin Graphite”.
Other embellishments on the outside include front fog lamps, tinted rear windows, a chrome-finish tailpipe, black-grained front air intakes and a honeycomb grille. The standard 15-inch alloy wheels with their special “Satin Graphite” finish, and the optional 16-inch alloy wheels with a matt-black diamond treatment, are both new to the range while the colour palette has grown to include Electronica Blue metallic and Marching Green matte.
Inside, the new Fiat 500S comes with black sport seats and a black roof lining which contrast with the door panels and seat edges, which are finished in blue, white or yellow. “Satin Graphite” detailing also features on the dashboard fascia and the sports steering wheel and the interior can also be trimmed in optional Frau leather with white or light blue details. A full-colour, seven-inch TFT instrument display is standard on the new 500S, while the Fiat 500S Convertible adds an electric canvas roof with a heated glass rear window.
The dashboard of the new Fiat 500S incorporates Fiat’s new Uconnect seven-inch touchscreen with a high resolution display as standard equipment, while the exclusive BeatsAudio sound system also debuts on the new Fiat 500S, priced as a £300 option – the seven-speaker system has a total output of 440 watts and features a digital amplifier integrating an advanced equalisation algorithm, which claims to recreate the entire sound spectrum that an artist experiences during studio recording.
In terms of safety, the Fiat 500S is equipped with seven airbags as standard equipment, including a driver’s side knee bag, as well as ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and a sophisticated ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system with ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), Hill Holder and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) to assist in emergency braking.
Four engines power the Fiat 500S – the 69 hp 1.2-litre petrol and the 85 hp 0.9 TwinAir petrol are both available with a five-speed manual or optional five-speed Dualogic automated manual transmission, while the 105 hp 0.9 TwinAir petrol is fitted with a 6-speed manual as standard. As for diesel power, the new 500S employs the 95hp 1.3 litre MultiJet II engine. The new Fiat 500S is on sale in the UK now, priced from £12,950 OTR when powered by the 1.2-litre 69hp petrol engine. The 85hp TwinAir version is priced from £14,250 OTR while the TwinAir 105hp is just £14,730 OTR. The FIAT 500S 1.3 MultiJet II 95hp is priced from £15,350 OTR.
