It is no secret that the Indian subsidiary of Mercedes, the popular German premium car maker, is readying the A Class for Indian car market debut.

There also are various sources which say that unlike the B Class, which was launched in India with only a petrol engine option, the upcoming A Class will come to us in both petrol and diesel guises.

In typical German premium car fashion, both the engines will be mated to automatic transmissions.

The petrol variant of the A Class, which has been christened as the A180, is powered by a 1.6 litre turbo motor that boasts of a max power output of 122 PS. The diesel engine variant, which has been dubbed as the A180 CDI, is powered by a 1.5 litres oil burner which has 109PS of max power. It may be noted that this engine is the same Renault sourced K9K diesel motor that powers many small cars in India.

The new A Class will be launched in India for a price that will be undercut by that of many D segment sedans. The car will battle it out against the upcoming 1 Series of cars from BMW and might even lock horns with the Audi A3 hatchback, if and when Audi India decides to bring it here.
