Earlier reports suggested that Maruti Suzuki was working on a 1.0 litre Boosterjet petrol engine for the S-Cross. The report added that the company’s compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza was also likely to benefit from the same engine. As we wait for official confirmation on the same, a new finding suggests that the company is planning another petrol engine for the brand’s only crossover.

Now, if reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is planning to offer the S-Cross with a M15 1.5 litre petrol engine, a 1490-cc four cylinder unit that produces a power output of 100 hp at 5900 rpm while the peak torque of 133 Nm comes up at 4100 rpm. The report further suggested that the said engine could come mated to a four speed automatic gearbox as an option. The 1.5 litre petrol engine is also likely to replace the 1.4 litre petrol engine in the Ciaz.

Currently, the model comes with 2 diesel engine options, a 1.3 litre DDiS 200 engine and a 1.6 litre DDiS 320 engine. While the former has been able to achieve decent if not good sales numbers, the latter hasn’t seen a reasonable demand. This has pushed the company to now make the 1.6 litre engine available only on a made to order basis. The model is available only through the Nexa dealerships which also undertakes sales for the Baleno. The move comes as the Indian automobile market sees a strong shift from diesel powered vehicles to petrol powered vehicles due to reasons such as the diesel ban that is currently in place in the capital.
