“This is the first time we have launched AT in this segment. Who would have thought that we would straightaway get 51 per cent bookings for AT models. Now, there will be a waiting period as the automatic transmission parts are being imported. We will import it for the first year and localise it after a year,” said Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava in an interview to Financial Express.

The company was estimating around 25-30% bookings for the AMT, and as can be seen, it has exceeded the company’s expectations by a huge margin.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT variant is priced only INR 39,000 above the manual transmission variant. This is the main reason for the bookings of the AMT variant to surpass the manual. Cars in the same segment available with an automatic transmission are priced more than INR 1 lakh than the manual transmission variants.

Also, the Celerio has the same ARAI fuel efficiency of 23.1 kmpl for both the manual and AMT variants. A low fuel efficiency in the automatic trims turns off many potential buyers in the cost sensitive Indian market.
