We have been reporting in detail from the time when the news about the Mahindra XUV500 Automatic surfaced. The launch of the Mahindra XUV500 automatic is scheduled to happen sometime in 2015. Now, according to a new report by ACI, the car will have a bump in power by upto 30 bhp.
The Mahindra XUV500, in the manual variant, develops 140 bhp from the 2.2 liter diesel engine. The Mahindra XUV500 automatic will develop 170 bhp from the same 2.2 liter diesel motor.
Sadly, the manual Mahindra XUV500’s power will not be increased at a later stage and will be limited at 140 bhp because the manual transmission, in its current avatar cannot withstand the extra power and torque.
The new automatic gearbox will be a 6 speed unit and will also be used in the upcoming SsangYong compact SUV (code: X100), which will be then followed by the XUV500.
“Yes, we are going to install the Aisin six-speed automatic, which is coming in January 2015, and Mahindra is also considering the same gearbox for the XUV500, so volume wise that is great for us and we can save some money,” said Y I Lee, President and CEO of SsangYong Motor Company.
This upcoming Aisin automatic gearbox will be a conventional torque converter, but will feature a lot of sophisticated hardware and electronics to improve efficiency by reducing ‘spin loss.’ According to Aisin, its new generation of automatic transmissions are much lighter and have quicker gearshifts too.
