Harley Davidson to expand business, eyes tier II cities

Harley Davidson India recently unveiled its new showroom in the city of Coimbatore and now, if reports are to be believed, the U.S. based motorcycle manufacturer has plans to expand its business to the tier II cities. The company, which began its Indian operations in August 2009, now has 13 bikes in its current line-up for 2016.

Harley Davidson, which reportedly has more than 65% market share in the segment, said that it would be expanding its dealership network in tier II cities where the company sees a good potential for growth.

The company has currently set up a manufacturing cum assembly unit in Bawal, Haryana. This plant undertakes the manufacturing exclusively for the Street 750 whereas the rest of the models are completely knocked down (CKD) units. The Street 750 is also exported from this plant to countries such as Australia and Japan.

Vikram Pawah, the Managing Director for Harley Davidson India, said that the kind of response received in tier II cities was fantastic and that the riding culture in these cities was advanced, hence the decision for the expansion. The iconic bike maker recently opened its dealerships in Lucknow, Kozhikode, Nagpur, Surat apart from the latest one that is situated in Coimbatore.

The US based manufacturer has sold more than 12,000 units since 2010, when its operations in India began. The company recently launched a mobile showroom which was displayed at the 2016 India Bike Week (IBW) held in Goa last month. The entry level model for Harley Davidson in India is the Street 750 that comes with a price tag of Rs. 4.52 lakh (Ex-Showroom, Delhi).
