The Honda X-ADV is the scooter version of an SUV, if you will – quite outlandish as a thought, but appealing nonetheless in execution. The X-ADV mixes off-road appeal with a tough chassis, long travel suspension, four-piston radial-mounted brakes up front grab twin 310mm discs. A 745cc twin-cylinder engine offers explosive power for a scooter.
The X-ADV’s 745cc, liquid-cooled SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine delivers low down punch from low rpm up through the mid-range. Peak power is 54 hp @ 6,250rpm with maximum torque of 68Nm @ 4,750rpm. Honda is claiming 300km+ plus range from the 13.1L fuel tank.
Transmission is via an advanced Dual Clutch system. Other goodies include a large 21L underseat storage compartment, 5-way adjustable screen and Smart Key system to ensure day-to-day convenience on this otherwise mad hat machine.
The X-ADV was designed in Italy and its brief was simple; to let the riders ‘Go have fun!’ Tapered aluminium handlebar, Africa Twin hand guards, Rally-style instrument display and centre stand are some of the things which reflect its tough character.
Rugged 17-inch/15-inch front and rear spoke wheels and block-pattern tyres underline the off-road capability. Lighting all around is LED, and the slim twin headlights are divided by a mesh grill. Compact indicators and dual lens rear light are a few other design highlights.
A large square rally-style instrument display shows all the information around a large central digital speedo and circular tacho. A separate display, just above the aluminium off-road style taper handlebar shows status of the parking lock and indicators. A thick aluminium bash plate guards the X-ADV’s underside.
A 12V power socket is also located under the seat. A centre stand – with tilt sensor – is fitted as standard and allows the X-ADV to be parked on an incline without fear of toppling.
The X-ADV uses a Smart Key for ignition, fuel cap and seat. With the Smart Key in rider’s pocket, one push of the button unlocks and powers the vehicle up. It also illuminates when pushed – or from the answer back function of the Smart Key – with a blue light. An immobiliser is standard.
You can also install top boxes for the bike, two options are available – 45L and 35 L. A rear rack, front bars, leg/foot deflector shields and floor plates are also available.
The X-ADV is finished in two standard colours Pearl Glare White and Victory Red. There are two special edition colours also available.
Suspension up front is a 153.5mm travel USD unit adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. At the rear you get a spring preload adjustable rear shock with 150mm travel. Ground clearance is 162mm with a wet weight of a rather heavy 238kg. Tyres are sized 120/70 R17 and 160/60 R15 front and rear.
The DCT auto transmission features two automatic modes plus the MT mode for manual gear changes. Standard automatic D mode selects lower ratios compared to other DCT-equipped machines.
The sportier S mode shifts up and down at higher rpm and offers three levels of performance; each level progressively more aggressive. The selected level is stored, and is also displayed on the dash.
