Ducati 899 Panigale revealed at Frankfurt

Ducati Panigale 899 (1)

The silken has finally been pulled off the Ducati 899 Panigale at Frankfurt. As reported in our earlier spy shot report, the baby Panigale gets a 148 bhp 898cc Superquadro (aka oversquare) L-twin cylinder motor against speculations of 150 bhp (pretty close!). The bore and stroke stands at a reduced 100mm X 57.2mm compared to the 1199’s 112mm X 60.8mm with Ducati’s trademark desmodromic valve system. Max power is produced at 10,750 rpm with peak torque of 99nm @ 9000 rpm.

Also as pointed out earlier, other changes include a conventional dual sided swingarm replacing the 1199’s exotic single sided unit. The 899 Panigale gets a switchable triple stage Bosch ABS with the rider given to choose from three levels of braking where Level 1 provides ‘Front-only’ (Race Mode), Level 2 is ABS plus rear lift prevention (Sport Mode) and Level 3 provides the highest braking stability with maximum rear lift prevention (Wet Mode).

Other set of electronics include Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), Electronic Throttle Control and Engine Brake Control (EBC). The 899 gets a single-injector-per cylinder system from Mitsubishi instead of the Magnetti Marelli found on the 1199 Panigale. Also on offer is an optional Ducati Data Analyzer (DDA) which records data of the track session.

The Ducati 899 Panigale is held together by a die-cast aluminium monocoque frame suspended on three way adjustable 43mm Big Piston Showa forks (4.7 inches travel) and horizontally mounted Sach’s three way adjustable rear monoshock. Riding on ten spoke 17 inch wheels, the 899 gets Pirelli Rosso Corsa 120/70Z R17 at the front and 180/60Z R17 at the rear. The rear tyre features a three-zone compound with harder rubber in the centre and softer at the shoulders for cornering.

Stopping power is provided by a top-notch Brembo braking unit with the front getting a radial mount four piston monobloc caliper on 320mm twin discs and a two pot single disc at the rear.

The Ducati 899 Panigale is priced at US$ 14,995 for the Ducati Red shade with black wheels. Also on offer is the Arctic White with red wheels colour scheme at an extra cost of US$ 300.
