Diesel-Gate: Volkswagen India to recall 1.9 lakh vehicles to fix emission software

2016 Volkswagen Polo 1.5 TDI Highline Travelogue Review (126)

Volkswagen India has recalled 1.9 lakh diesel powered vehicles to fix the emission software. This recall is purely voluntary as the car maker did not face any charges for violating emission norms in India unlike the US. While an earlier report suggested that the process will commence in July 2016, Volkswagen Group India Communication’s Adhish Alawani confirmed that there is no fixed time-frame that has been decided for the recall.

The recall, as commented Volkswagen India Head of Marketing Kamal Basu, will commence in the second half of 2016. Speaking to PTI, Basu said, “Starting from the second half of 2016, Volkswagen will recall 1.90 lakh cars and continue till ten months. Since recall was done in the US to fix the emission software, the company decided to do also the same in India to keep updated with the changes made outside. Volkswagen complied with all the emission norms compliant with Bharat Stage IV standards. When the emission scandal broke out in the US, Volkswagen India saw a drop in sales but now the trend has reversed.”

What is Volkswagen Dieselgate?

Dieselgate” scam involved the Volkswagen Group for violating US diesel emission norms since 2009. The carmaker was accused of rigging its diesel vehicles with a software that turned on full pollution controls only when the car was undergoing official emissions testing. Called a “defeat device”, this algorithm, according to estimations, pollute 10 to 40 times the legal limits during normal driving. As many as 11 million vehicles were estimated to have been affected worldwide, five million in United States alone.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen India had recalled 3,877 Vento sedans, equipped with the 1.5 diesel manual, for emissions inconsistency. There is no specific date decided for the recall. An official communication would be sent to the customers.
