Volkswagen India recalls 3877 Vento 1.5 diesel manual cars for emissions inconsistency

In an official statement, Volkswagen India has announced that it’s recalling 3877 Vento cars with 1.5-litre diesel engine and manual gearbox due to inconsistent Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions. The emissions on the said models were observed to be “sometimes exceeding the threshold limits during the Conformity of Production (COP) tests done by ARAI”. The German carmaker is also withdrawing the 1.5 diesel manual Vento from the market until the emission related issues are fixed. “Volkswagen India is temporarily holding back sales of the manual gearbox version of the Volkswagen Vento with 1.5-litre diesel engine with immediate effect”, the company said in its official statement.

It’s notable that the DSG automatic transmission variant of the model has not been recalled, and will continue to be sold through the company’s dealerships.

In the meantime, Volkswagen India is analysing technical measures and will furnish a report to ARAI regarding the same to solve this inconsistency as soon as possible. Once the suggested technical measures are tested, approved and confirmed by the competent authorities, Volkswagen India will implement the measures on both its new and recalled vehicles. The production of the Vento 1.5 diesel manual will resume thereafter.

Volkswagen India asserts that this problem with the Vento 1.5 diesel manual is not connected to the global NOx emissions topic and is an isolated issue.

In the statement, Volkswagen India has also stressed on the fact that all its other car models and variants are technically safe and roadworthy. “All other diesel models and variants of Volkswagen India, including Vento 1.5TDI with Automatic Transmission (DSG) and all diesel Polo cars, conform to the norms and will continue to be produced and sold in India” read the statement.
