We all have been annoyed by high-beams from the oncoming vehicles and there’s hardly anything that we can do about it. But the law administrators in China have found a unique way of penalising high-beam offenders.
Along with a fine of 300 yuan or USD 44, the rule violators are forced to sit directly in front of the vehicle and stare at the lights for 60 seconds. Photographs of this unique penalty were posted on Shenzhen Traffic Police’s official Weibo account with a caption “Tonight we are carrying out punishments using a high beam.” The post received massive response with over 87,000 likes and 93,000 shares.
The cops used the same punishment back in 2014 when they made the offenders stare directly at the headlight for five minutes. Back then, the punishment faced a severe backlash. But this time around, the initiative received a positive response on the micro blogging site. One comment which garnered 12,000 likes stated “Am I the only one who thought a minute was too short?” Another person added that the campaign is “long overdue”. But not everyone agreed with the method as some felt that it could cause serious eye-damage. One of the persons against the punishment also stated, “This is a human rights violation”.
