Indian performance bike scene is fast coming of age. Indian bike aficionados are fast recognizing the need of powerful brakes and ABS units. TVS Motors and Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India is already offering ABS unit on their flagship Indian bikes and it is being said that the upcoming KTM 390 Duke too will be sold with an ABS unit in India.
While enough has been talked about the importance of ABS units, petal discs brakes are something that warrants more recognition from Indian bikers. TVS is currently offering petal discs on the Apache series of Indian performance bikes.
What are petal brake discs?
Basically, petal brake discs are round discs with 20% or more of the surface area taken away. The petal brakes reduce the unsprung weight and also provide better heat dissipation, which is needed to maintain brake feel and responsiveness during extended heavy use. Another plus point, for many, is the enhanced aesthetic appeal. But brakes are something that should follow the function over form philosophy. No?
Chinmay Dangre, a Pune based motorcycle specialist has designed aftermarket petal disc brakes for a range of Indian performance bikes that include KTM Duke 200, Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi and the Yamaha R15.
These petal discs are being claimed to have been made out of high quality stainless steel. The aftermarket kit will include both front and rear disc brakes.
The new petal disc brake kits for KTM Duke 200, Yamaha R15 and Bajaj Pulsar 220 is expected to go on sale in about 3 months of time and with a price of around INR 7000/-.
