Meter Down: Uber cab drivers in India earning over a lakh every month

Ever wondered how much would the Uber taxi guy who usually ferries you to the airport earns every month? Does he earn enough or did the incident that took place in Delhi last year affected his earnings? Manan Gupta, a strategy planner from Delhi shares his story about his interactions with two Uber cab drivers.

It all began when Gupta boarded a Toyota Innova MPV from UberBlack service. To his surprise, the cab not only had latest magazines and current newspapers, but also offered mineral water, lassi, coffee, soft drinks, along with mouth freshners, chips and some toffees – all available on the MRP.

Gupta, out of curiosity, asked the Uber Cab driver about his monthly income to which the driver replied, “I have made (up to) Rs 52,000 per week. I work from morning 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Saturdays and Sundays rake in the most amount of moolah.”

But does that mean the cab driver makes Rs 50,000-52,000 every week?

The UberBlack driver added, “That depends. Last week, I was out to meet my family in Punjab for three days. I worked for four days and made Rs 29,000.”

After deducting the cost incurred on the vehicle, which comes up to around Rs 40,000-50,000 on fuel and about 10,000-15,000 on maintenance, the driver is left with around Rs 1,20,000 per month. Gupta was surprised and decided to confirm these figures by booking another Uber Cab ride, this time in a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire sedan under the UberX service.

This time though, the figuers were relatively low at about Rs 28,000-34,000 per week. Gupta says that the driver of the Swift Dzire sedan earns an average of Rs 1,20,000 per month and spends nearly Rs 30,000-35,000 on fuel and Rs 10,000 on maintenance which leaves him with Rs 75,000-80,000 per month.

Thinking about enrolling with Uber already? The money seems attractive but the cab drivers have their own woes. Drivers have to interact with various kinds of customers, some of whom are not so friendly. Health issues also affect the drivers as they have to work for long hours to earn more money.
