The Skoda Rapid was initially designed by taking design cues from its hatchback model, the Fabia. Now, the car’s design has various changes and while it has always been one of the driver’s cars in its segment, the Rapid also offers a comfortable ride for the occupants.
The facelifted Skoda Rapid doesn’t get much of an update in the exterior design but the signature front butterfly grille gets a chrome treatment that makes the front looks bold. The headlights are bigger and the projector headlamps provide great vision on roads. There are two flat LED strips that stay always ON and double up as the Daytime Running Lamp (DRL). Sharp, rectangular fog lamps are mounted on the front bumper and the typical bonnet design with creases flowing into the logo is followed from the past. From the A-Pillar to the tailgate, the design remains identical to older models. At the rear, the bumper gets a minor change with a chrome strip at the bottom and an integrated spoiler on top.
Inside the Rapid, the design and layout are similar to its predecessor but the quality levels are improved to meet the competition. The all-new 6.5-inch infotainment display that dominates the central console is crisper and the touchscreen also works as good as most other rivals. You can connect your smartphone easily and there's MirrorLink to simulate the phone’s screen on the new TFT display. Android Auto and Apple Carplay are also supported along with outlets for USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth. The leather-wrapped steering wheel looks chunky and offers a firm grip, while the buttons are easy to get used to.
The volume adjuster on the steering wheel is a scroll-type dial that feels natural for the function and works well too. Other new features included are auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, climate control, cooled glove box, remotely operated power windows and cruise control. The driver seat offers ample grip and comfort thanks to enhanced under-thigh support from the seats. The rear passenger seats are roomy as compared to the old generation Rapid, but space isn't in the same league as segment leaders like Honda City or Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The 460-litre boot offers adequate space and is enough to carry your weekend luggage.
The new Skoda rapid comes with ABS as standard to protect the passengers inside the car and also offers two airbags one for the driver and another for the co-driver. Side airbags are also on offer. Electronic stability control is fitted on the diesel automatic variant along with Hill Hold Control. Rear parking sensors, auto dimming IRVM, anti-pinch windows and height adjustable headrests for all four passengers complete the safety list.
The updated Skoda rapid comes with two engine options - 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel mated to manual and automatic transmissions. The TDI diesel engine is good for 110 PS and 250 Nm of torque, is remarkably refined and delivers punchy performance. On the other hand, the petrol motor cranks out 105 PS and 153 Nm of torque. The petrol motor can be had mated to a 6-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the diesel engine offers the choice of a 5-speed stick of a 7-speed dual-clutch system.
For those who enjoy driving and also in terms of convenience, the 7-speed DSG + diesel engine combination offers the best of both worlds. The motor is inherently fuel efficient, and coupled with the intelligent gearbox with 7 ratios, achieving high km/l numbers is easy. The dual-clutch system is also the smoothest, quickest and one of the most intelligent gearboxes out there.
Skoda Rapid price starts from INR 9.31 Lakh to INR 16.95 Lakh.
