Quick Review: Bajaj Discover 125M [Images & Ride Report]

And the engine? I remember you are fond of the ST’s motor . . .

We still can’t find any 125cc bike in the market, whose engine performs as beautifully as that of the 125ST. Like we said above, the new Bajaj Discover 125M shares its engine with the pricier sibling. However, for the 125M, peak power is down from 13PS t0 11.5PS. But worth a mention here is that both the models have a torque figure of 10.8 NM, with the new bike enjoying it a full 1000rpm lower! The engine comes mated to a four speed manual gearbox, with well selected gear ratios.

Terrific! But how is the real world performance?

As good as it looks on the paper! The 125M’s 4 valve engine has quite some grunt on offer! Slot the bike into first gear, and the bike picks up the momentum with quite some gusto. The engine enjoys excellent low and mid torque, with performance fading out only towards the top of the rev range. Worth a mention here is that even with two full grown adults on board, the bike trundled along at speeds as low as 25 kmph, in fourth gear! The engine and the gearbox score high in terms of compatibility and come together really well to endow the 125M with some serious sense of enthusiasm. The gearshifts are smooth and nary do you come across a false neutral.

But did you just say that ‘top-end’ performance is lack luster?

Not really! We did manage to hit a speedo indicated 95kmph on a relatively open stretch of city road, which means given a decent stretch of clear road, the bike can easily record a top whack of around 105 kmph, or maybe even more! However, the bike feels like it is in its elements below speeds of 80-85 kmph. The engine is a fairly refined unit and is surely one of the peppier 125cc single pot units out there.

All good. But ‘kitna deti hai’?

The new Bajaj Discover 125M has a claimed fuel economy of 60-65 kmpl, which, as per Bajaj, is significantly better than the fuel efficiency figures it has collected for the Shine and Glamour thru various market surveys. We believe that given the decent torque and gearing of the new model, a real world FE of around 50-55 kmpl should be achievable.

  1. New generation Discovers are Sh**
The earlier versions of Discover were symphony notes. The grunt was masculine, the reliability was unquestionable. The new generation has none of the vital characteristics. Early rusting and reliability issues crop up after like 6 months. Please BAJAJ, bring back the old warhorse.

  2. I hate Bajaj Discover 125 ST. I would compare it to a vibrator. Just a vibrating bike that you would scare to drive above 45 KM/hr. Such a waste of money.

Mr. Bajaj, Rather than launching so many variants bikes, Please launch a quality bike. Your sick customer (Have told many people not to buy Discover)
