803cc Ducati Scrambler at the 2014 EICMA

If recent reports from TMCBlog are to be believed, we may finally see Ducati jump into the entry-level performance motorcycle segment. The report suggests that the Italian marque will reveal a 400cc variant of the Scrambler at the 73rd Worldwide Motorcycle Exhibition 2015 (EICMA) in Italy scheduled in November.

The motorcycle will reportedly carry forward the Scrambler’s design but will draw power from a 400cc L- twin cylinder Testastretta engine that, in our opinion, should probably put out 40-45 hp of power. The current Ducati Scrambler, with its 803cc 90-degree L-Twin, Desmodromic distribution, air cooled engine delivers 75 hp of power and 67.79Nm of torque.

The current Ducati Scrambler is priced at sub Rs 7 lakh and we expect the rumoured 400cc variant to be priced at sub Rs 5 lakh mark which will place it against the Harley-Davidson Street 750. With that displacement and expected performance figures, this 400cc Ducati will be playing very close to the Indo-Austrian pocket rocket in terms of performance (though not in terms of price), the KTM Duke 390 but the Italian marque will have an edge with the twin-cylinder motor. The Ducati Scrambler, if and when launched, will also face competition from the recently unveiled Japanese duo – the Yamaha MT-03 and the Kawasaki Z300.

The current Ducati Scrambler comes to India via CKD route and we expect the 400cc Scrambler to follow its 803cc elder sibling.

Wouldn’t that be a sweet deal? Stay tuned for more updates.
