Volkswagen Taigun could be headed our way !

If what our friends at Overdrive have reported is true, Volkswagen’s new compact SUV is headed to India and could  be launched in 2014.

The Volkswagen Taigun, which was unveiled in late October, will battle it out against the Ford Ecosport and the Renault Duster.

In words of Volkswagen Sales Chief Christian Klingler, Taigun is “A small SUV would have promising market potential for example in India, South America, Mexico and partly in China.”

The Taigun Compact SUV follows the familiar VW design language and looks all set to play the perfect baby brother to the Touareg.

The Volkswagen Taigun Compact SUV Concept is based on the Volkswagen Up! and is dimensionally similar to some B Segment hatchbacks. The new Compact SUV is merely 3,859 mm long and will qualify for duty cuts on its arrival in Indian market. The Taigun Concept is 1,728 mm wide and 1,570 mm in height. The new VW has a wheelbase of 2,470 mm.

Powering the Taigun is a 1.0-litre TSI engine that offers a very healthy power-torque output of 110 PS-175 Nm. Tipping the scales at just 985 kgs, the Taigun can dismiss the 100kmph from standstill in a quick 9.2 seconds. The car has a top whack of 186 kmph. All this and the car still has a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 22.2 kpl! (The Ford Ecosport with the EcoBoost surely has some competition coming its way. . No? )

The Taigun looks like a strict four seater and has a boot space of 280 litres which can be expanded to 987 liters with rear seats folded down.

  1. Can a stretched version of this Taigun work against Mariti Ertiga which is a big hit in Asia? I think so…!!

  2. That's what changes the face of Volkswagon in India for sure. Hope they get a 4 cylinder diesel engine which fits into norms and……that's it….Congrats on the right decision.

  3. When you drive VW TDI people around certainly knows that it's diesel, when you drive Hyundai CRDI one has to search for the lable whether it's CRDI or…!! We want silient, torquey, fuel efficient engines.

  4. Whoa! This the best news since the Ecosport and Trax cover. Go VW Go!_ _I just hope that when it comes to India, it will be another 50-100mm longer, to help it with a little bigger boot space. Else it will no better than an Entry Level hatchback bootspace. Even the Quanto is 126 mm longer than it._ _5-7 lakhs for the base model, and this will sell like hot cakes. This could threaten even the likes of the Mahindra Quanto. The bigger Polo based Compact SUV could start with a base model price of 7-9lakhs.

  5. I likes. Just what a baby SUV should be. The fight between this and the Ecosport should be fun to watch. But the duster still gets early bird points. The reason the public is going for them is, of course they are small, efficient, fast (enough) , but boy, they all _look good_. Especially this one. It's the looker of the lot!
