The 2015 Toyota Camry is a pretty well rounded car. Well, Camrys and Corollas might be scoffed for being dull, boring and clinical by many an enthusiast, but it serves it’s purpose pretty well. However that sentiment has been addressed by Toyota at this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas. And how! Presenting the Toyota Sleeper Camry, which is essentially a 850 bhp dragster wrapped around by an unassuming 2015 Camry body-shell.
Built in just 11 weeks by Toyota USA’s Motorsports Technical Center, the Sleeper Camry’s exterior makes no bones about it’s alarming capabilities. Aside from the 18 inch alloy wheels, ultra-fat 335/30 tires at the rear and the lowered stance, there are almost no obvious external differences between the Sleeper Camry and the face-lifted 2015-model year car.
Under the Camry XSE body shell is where the magic lies- a tube-frame chassis cradles the 5.7-litre V8 engine, transmission, rear axle and electronics package flicked from Toyota’s full-size Tundra pickup truck. To bring power output up from 284kW/544Nm to 634kW (850hp) and beyond, Toyota roped in a supercharger, wet nitrous system, MagnaFlow exhaust, and forged pistons and connecting rods to the V8.
Toyota estimates that the Sleeper Camry will have a scintillating quarter mile (400m) time of 9.8 seconds. The Sleeper Camry’s doors are fully functioning but the rest of the interior, though, is stripped down and focused on just delivering blistering quarter mile times, with space enough only for the driver.
