Ferrari’s latest you-can-own-it-at-our-convenience track-only hypercar, the FXX K, has won the prestigious Best of the Best Red Dot Award for Design. Now in tis 60th year, the Red Dot Award is the world’s leading product design accolade, and Ferrari has won it three times in its history.

To celebrate this win, the usually secretive Maranello has released a short video showing how it arrived at the design for the FXX K. You might remember that Ferraris used to be penned by Pininfarina apart from a few Bertone moments. But that era is over, now that Centro Stile Ferrari has taken over a couple of years ago to keep the design gig in house. The FXX K is their crowning achievement so far, and it shows.

According to Ferrari, designer Flavio Manzoni and his team at the Ferrari Styling Centre were tasked with keeping the LaFerrari’s looks intact while ensuring every new styling component was functional and every single line was created to enhance performance.  They also had to “radically” modify the body panels to increase downforce without impinging on the car’s aesthetic.

While the clip doesn’t have a voice over, you can see the styling and engineering teams spent countless hours working on the car.  The company also released a handful of sketches which show some of the potential designs that were being considered for the high-performance model.

Approximately 5,000 entries from 56 nations were in the running for the Red Dot Award this year. The work of the Ferrari Style Centre headed by Flavio Manzoni was selected by an international jury made up of respected designers, design professors and specialist journalists from 25 countries. The award will be conferred to Ferrari at a special ceremony to be held in Essen, Germany, on June 29.
