The 2014 Mercedes S Class finally made its public debut today at the Airbus A380 Delivery Center in Hamburg, Germany. The new S Class comes brimmed with luxury and techno gadgetry features. To start with the pre-heated steering wheel, front and rear seats and armrests which include an ENERGIZING massage system based on hot-stone massage therapy with six different massaging programs. Rear seats come with an integrated telephone, additional stowage compartments and a folding table. A top of the line The Burmester® High-End 3D Surround Sound system with 24 high-performance speakers and 24 separate amplifier channels with a total output of 1540 watts with a set of 12.3 inch TFT screens for in car audio visual entertainment.
The S-Class comes with LINGUATRONIC- a voice activated control system that could enable occupants to control phones and music systems using voice commands. The feature can read your messages and emails too. A new feature called AIR-BALANCE package takes care of perfume atomisation in 4 different fragrances, ionisation and efficient filtration inside the car. The THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control in the rear has two additional cooling zones.
The car now uses a full LED lighting setup and talking of numbers, each headlamp with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus consists of 56 LEDs and 35 LEDs per tail light with the ambient lighted interiors sporting as many as 300 LEDs. With a new stereo camera and multi-stage radar in place, the S-Class is claimed to have a 360 degree vision.
The new S-Class comes with an optional ROAD SURFACE SCAN that detects undulations in the road surface through the stereo camera and the MAGIC BODY CONTROL tunes up the suspension to tackle the changing surfaces in real time. The standard equipment for the new S-Class reads an Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS and an improved version of AIRMATIC full air suspension system.
There are two body lengths to choose from: 5248 and 5116 millimetres – 42 and 40 millimetres longer than the predecessor model respectively considering that Europe and North America S-Class owners are frequently behind the wheel themselves, the flagship model in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car portfolio is very much a chauffeur-driven vehicle in Asia. Also three interior colour options and wooden trims would be available to choose from.
The new S Class is powered by a 4.7 litre twin turbo V8 pumping 455 bhp and 700 nm of torque, and transferred to the wheels via 7 speed auto transmission. The new S-Class motor is claimed to be extremely frugal for its class and implementation of “Efficient Technology” has almost halved fuel consumption to 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres. An all-wheel-drive version and the S63 AMG is slated to follow post a few months after the official launch. Two new variants on the V-12 engine i.e. the S600 and the S65 AMG are slated for next year’s debut. Mercedes claims a 0-100 kph sprint of 4.8 seconds for the new S Class.
Safety features include next generation set of features such as Active Parking Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Night View Assist Plus, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, Brake Assist Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with pedestrian recognition etc.
