Volvo Cars has unveiled its S90 luxury sedan in Gothenburg, Sweden today. The elegantly styled car is a purist’s delight, and looksready to take on the best sedans in its category. Upon launch the Volvo S90 will be taking on the likes of the 5-series, E-Class and Audi A6. Headline news according to Volvo’s official release is superior materials, technology, comfort and “class-leading semi-autonomous features”.
Flaunting its clean, well-balanced Scandinavian lines on the outside, the S90 will be no less of a wonder inside the cabin. The car is claimed to get cutting-edge safety, and cloud-based applications and services. The interior, with its Sensus Connect touchscreen that debuted in the XC90, will work towards reducing the number of buttons to a bare minimum.
Powering the S90 will be three engines. The T5 variant gets a turbocharged version of the brand’s four-cylinder, 2.0 liter motor with an expected output of 240bhp. The T6 variant gets a supercharger and 302bhp and the top of the line T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid will have about 400 bhp.
The S90 is also Volvo’s serious step towards its vision of reducing car casualties in models to an absolute zero by 2020. To achieve this, Volvo claims to have equipped the S90 with “world first safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features”.
After a recent 11 billion dollar investment, Volvo has been riding a resurgent wave. The company is seeing strong demand for almost all its new models from markets that matter. Volvo Cars has seen an 18% growth in US car sales so far in 2015. The all-new 2016 XC90 has received strong demand from American drivers along with the XC60, which has enjoyed 31% growth in US sales. The S90 will further strengthen Volvo’s position.
Senior management at the Swedish car company is euphorically positive about the new car. “The S90 has taken a big step forward in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
“The S90 is a terrific addition to the Volvo Cars lineup in the United States,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “it will continue the terrific sales momentum Volvo Cars has gained within the last year.”
