Team Orion Racing India of KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai has won the first JK Tyre Formula Design Challenge 2015. Over 900 engineering students from 36 colleges from across India participated in the six-day event, which began on January 20. A panel of international judges comprising of Felix Scherke, research Engineer at Daimler, Maria Bonilla-Torres, System Designer for Robert Bosch GmbH and Ian Thomas judged the event. The winners get an opportunity to spend an entire race weekend with race engineer’s fem JK Tyres.

Sanjay Sharma, Head-Motorsport, JK Tyre and Industries Limited, said, “Congratulations to Team Orion Racing for their excellent team work. It is very reassuring to see such professionalism and expertise among these young engineers. They surely have a bright future ahead.”

On the occasion Karan Bhansali, Team Captain, Orion Racing India – K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering said, “We are very proud of theachievement; the team has worked day & night over the last few months to achieve these results. It is prestigious for any engineering student to be part of Orion Racing India. However without the support & encouragement of the college, our professors and the Principal, this would not have been possible, for which we cannot thank them enough.”

The Principal. K J Somaiya Engineering College, Ms. Shubha Pandit added, “Engineering is best learnt on the field. Our approach to teaching engineering is to encourage students to push the envelope in thinking, innovate and implement ideas. This not only gives them exposure to real practical issues, but they also learn to work in teams, professionalcompetition, and the importance of hands on in engineering. We are proud of our students.”
