Tata Revotron Engine Family (Petrol) Launched in India: Official Release

Tata Revotron 1.2 T petrol Engine

Tata Motors have announced the launch of the REVOTRON Series engines. The 1.2 liter, turbocharged petrol engines will power the future models of the company in the passenger vehicle market. The Tata Revotron Engine has been initially introduced in the 1.2 liter avatar. Christened 1.2T, the new engine is a Turbocharged Intercooled Multi-point Fuel Injected (MPFi) powerplant. In future, the REVOTRON series will include 3-and 4-cylinder petrol engines for various displacements.

Tata Motors is using adjectives such as ‘revolutionary’ for the new engine. The engine, going by the specs, with peak power output of 85PS @ 5000 rpm and peak torque output of 140 Nm @ 1750 – 3500 rpm looks impressive. To call it revolutionary, however, would be letting the imagination run a tad too far. There already are more advanced engines available in the market, in the form of the ford Ecoboost and VW TSI powerplants.

The advantages of the new Tata Revotron Engine, as listed down by the official release are as follows

o Turbocharged Multi-Point Fuel Injected (MPFi) Engine delivering 85 PS @ 5000 RPM and 140 NM @ 1750-3500 RPM
o Multi-drive mode for better throttle response
o Advanced catalytic converter reducing toxic emissions
o Light weight and powerful
o Extremely silent engine
o Drive by wire technology for enhanced drive experience
o Low friction crank case for minimised NVH
o Smart Electronic Control Unit for precise control
o Low weight but high strength for a long lasting engine with Low maintenance
o 8-Hole fuel injector for efficient combustion
o Multi-drive mode for maximum fuel efficiency

According to Tata Motors, the REVOTRON Engine Series has been designed based on extensive feedback from car owners, car enthusiasts and expert drivers from across the globe; observing their driving habits followed by extensive testing in climatic conditions in India as well as in countries like the UK and Korea.

Tata Motors also worked closely with global engine consultant AVL (Austria) and key technology partners like Bosch, Honeywell, Mahle and INA to develop the new engine.

Announcing the launch, Mr.RanjitYadav, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit said,“With the launch of REVOTRON 1.2T, Tata Motors passenger vehicles business is making a strategic shift towards a more complete portfolio. The name itself, an amalgamation of Revolution and the French word “tronel”, meaning ‘balance”, conveys the essence of this engine brand that uses key technological advances to revolutionize and balance great driving manoeuvrability, without compromising on power or fuel efficiency. We are enhancing our portfolio with the next generation petrol engines–REVOTRON series”.

Here we have a bit more detail on the new Tata Revotron Engine family

Performance

The engine is equipped with a HighBoost Turbo-Charger delivering 85PS @ 5000 RPM & 140 Nm @ 1750-3500 RPM. The modern water-cooled turbo-charger, with its low inertia wheel, provides a faster response for a flat, seamless segment-highest torque density, which is kicked in at the lowest RPM and delivered over a wide range of revolutions, feeding the vehicle with raw power continuously. It’s multi-drivemode,coupled with a superior throttle response, advanced catalytic converter with reduced Toxic Emissionsand Smart ECU (Electronic Control Unit) with various innovative strategies, ensure a superlative performance on Indian roads.

Refinement

The engine is light-weight and powerful, with a stiffened crankcase that minimizesNoise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) for a refined output. The engine is refined with tuned intake and exhaust system for improved combustion noise that isfurther reduced with silent-steel oil pan and lower auxiliary system noise. Enhanced with Smart ECUfor precise control, the engine is powered by wire technology for a smooth and responsive drive experience.

Economy

The engine comes with another segment-first – a selectable multi-drive modeand uses low viscosity, fuel efficient engine oil. An optimisedwater-jacket and head gasket, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, ensures efficient combustion and reduces thermal inertia. In addition, the engine has been incorporated with an 8-hole fuel injector for superior efficiency and assisted by innovative calibration

  1. I own and use an INdigo marina petrol 2006 model car. It is still running good and has done just 70K Kms. If i can possibly fit this engine in my old car for a reasonbale price, it would be great to experiment with this engine without too much of costs. My 8 years old marina has been a good family car with zero accidents in the past 8 years. Only problem is the petrol engine that only delivers 12Kms / Ltr of FE in city driving and 15 in Highways.
