Spotted: Mahindra’s upcoming scooter code-named G301

Indian scooter market, which was once dominated by Bajaj decades ago, witnessed a huge change ever since automatic-transmission scooters like Scooty, Activa and the likes entered the country.

Mahindra, who ventured substantially late into the competition, has been trying its best to make a mark in this segment. Since its entry into automatic transmission scooter segment in 2008, Mahindra Two Wheelers Limited has introduced models like Rodeo, Duro, Flyte and Kine. However, these scooters failed to stand against the Hondas and Yamahas of the world.

But, Mahindra has not given up hopes. In its latest attempt to increase its sales and capture more market share, Mahindra Two Wheelers Limited is working on developing a new 110cc scooter, code-named G301. Mahindra Two Wheelers plans to place this new product against stalwarts such as the Honda Activa, Dio, TVS Jupiter and Hero Maestro.

Currently, Mahindra sells less than 2.5 lakh two wheelers per year. To quadruple its present volumes, Mahindra Two Wheelers plans to launch a new model/variant in each quarter. The G301 is most likely to be a basic level scooter with no excessive features being offered in order to keep costs down. The 110cc engine is not expected to produce more than 8bhp of power and equal number in torque. The spy images also point out that this new scooter will have ample of leg room.

Now with Activa 125 in the market, major competitors will try to compete in that segment making some room of ease for manufacturers like Mahindra Two Wheelers to enter into. But will this be a game changer for the company? Only time will answer that question.
