A few days ago, there were reports about Volkswagen’s new sub-4-metre SUV for India. We had also reported on the project. Now, it is official. Volkswagen has confirmed that a new compact SUV will arrive in India in 2027.
This is an interesting move from the German carmaker. Volkswagen had been quite cautious about entering the small SUV space and was mainly relying on products such as the Virtus and Taigun. The new SUV will change that. It will become Volkswagen’s most affordable SUV in India and will sit below the Taigun.
A Return To The Sub 4 Metre Segment
The new SUV will also mark Volkswagen’s return to the sub-4-metre space after the Polo and Ameo were discontinued in the Indian market. The segment has plenty of strong players today:
- Tata Nexon
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza
- Hyundai Venue
- Kia Sonet
- Mahindra XUV 3XO
- And of course, the Skoda kylaq
Volkswagen now wants a share of this large market with a locally developed product.
Platform And Engine Details
The SUV will use the MQB A0 IN platform. This architecture is already used by several Skoda and Volkswagen models in India.
| Detail | Expected Information |
|---|---|
| Launch | 2027 |
| Length | Under 4 metres |
| Platform | MQB A0 IN |
| Engine | 1.0 litre TSI petrol |
| Power | 114bhp |
| Torque | 178Nm |
| Manual | 6 speed |
| Automatic | Expected 8 speed |
| Production | Local |
Volkswagen has not officially confirmed the engine yet. However, the 1.0 litre TSI from the Skoda Kylaq is expected to be used. On the Kylaq, it produces 114bhp and 178Nm.
The Volkswagen SUV could also get an 8 speed automatic gearbox. The Kylaq currently uses a 6 speed automatic.
Kylaq Connection But Different Design
The upcoming SUV will share its basic architecture with the Skoda Kylaq. However, Volkswagen is expected to give it a different exterior and interior. This will help the two SUVs have their own identity despite sharing important mechanical parts.
High localisation will also be a major part of the project. Volkswagen says the SUV is being developed specifically for India and will be manufactured locally.
What About The Price?
An expected price range of around Rs 8 lakh to Rs 13 lakh is being expected. For the company, this SUV could bring a much wider group of buyers into its showrooms. It also gives Volkswagen a product in a segment where it has been absent for several years.
A New Chapter For Volkswagen
The new SUV could become an important product for Volkswagen in India. The brand will have to get the pricing right and give the SUV enough character to stand apart from the Kylaq.
For buyers, it means one more option in an already crowded segment. And for Volkswagen, it is a chance to reconnect with customers looking for a smaller SUV with the brand’s design and driving character.
