Sales of Skoda Rapid diesel with manual transmission suspended

Volkswagen India recently recalled the Vento for inconsistent emission norms which the company says were seen in the 1.5 litre diesel engine variant mated to the manual transmission. Reports now suggest that the Skoda Rapid, powered by a diesel engine mated to a manual transmission, has been another victim to the emission issue. The same platform is known to underpin both, the Vento and the Rapid.

Reports suggest that the move has been taken voluntarily and not due to any directive from the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). It was further said that the Rapid  had not failed any COP (Conformity of Production) test either. Although, as seen in the Vento’s case, other models of the Skoda Rapid will continue to be sold.

The news comes just a day after Volkswagen announced the recall for 3,877 units of the Vento. The aforementioned model, the Vento with a 1.5 litre diesel engine mated to a manual transmission, was recalled after Volkswagen said that inconsistent carbon emissions were found. The emissions, as described by the company, were sometimes found to be exceeding the threshold limits during the Conformity of Production (COP) tests done by ARAI.

In this case however, Skoda India hasn’t officially issued a recall as the production vehicles have not been found flouting the prescribed limits of carbon monoxide. The problem is not connected to the global nitrogen oxide emissions, the company further stated. Skoda India will continue to sell other variants of the Rapid such as the 1.5 litre TDI diesel engine with an automatic transmission and the 1.6 litre MPi petrol engine that is mated to both, an automatic as well as a manual transmission.
