Royal Enfield to thump into newer markets

The global footprint of the ‘Thumpers’ is all set to increase. Royal Enfield, a part of Eicher group, currently exports its motorcycles to foreign markets like the United States and a few countries in Europe. The manufacturer also intends to penetrate the motorcycle market in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East apart from strenghtening its existing presence in the above countries.

According to S Koshy, Deputy General Manager of Sales and Markeing, Royal Enfield, the company will expand the capacity to one lakh units by 2013 at an investment of Rs.65 crore at its existing plant in Chennai. The company is even confident of tripling its turover from exporting moorcycles to 15% from the curren 5% over the next three years.

If industry murmurs are to be believed the company is planning to develop bigger engines in the range of 800-1000cc for its motorcycles. Looks like the entry of Harley Davidson has affected the think-tank at RE in the same manner as threat of privatisation measures affected the performance of government employees.
