The Ministry of Road Transport has revised the speed limit for cars at 100kph while motorcycles would be allowed to ply at 80kph on highways. Civic bodies and law enforcement authorities can maintain specific speed limits for municipal and local roads after taking into consideration safety aspects. This revision of speed limit has come after nearly two and a half decade.

A ministry official told ET Auto, “Obviously, a car or bike cannot be allowed at high speed in crowded or residential areas. So, local authorities including deputy commissioners, collectors and police will decide the speed limit for all categories of vehicles in every locality.”

So, besides cars and motorcycles, which vehicles can go at what speed now?

  • Vehicles used for carrying nine or more passengers such as mini bus or buses: 80 kph
  • Vehicles used for carrying not more than eight passengers like cars: 100 kph
  • Speed limit of goods vehicles: 80 kph

Rohit Baluja, a road safety expert and member of the panel that was constituted in 2006-07 to look afresh into speed limits, said “Though revising the speed limit was long overdue, we had suggested that the ministry should issue a guideline for local bodies and state governments that they should fix the limits after scientific study of local safety needs and the type of crashes that have happened.”

What do you think of these newly set speed limits by Road Transport Ministry? Do you think that 120 kph on highway would have been more reasonable speed limit? Share your thoughts through comments below.
