It’s not the first time the Renault Grand Scenic 7-seater MPV has been spotted in India. The big, Innova-rivalling MPV has been caught testing on the Indian roads without any camouflage earlier as well. The general notion is that the car is not supposed to be launched here, but brought here for benchmarking purposes, especially in view of the small Lodgy getting primed for an India introduction.
Our reader and fan Naresh Babu from Chennai shared these images with us. The Grand Scenic in the pictures here is the third generation, pre-facelift model of the big MPV. The third generation grand Scenic was introduced in 2009, with a facelift following up in 2013. The car which has won many Car of the Year awards over the year both in hatchback and MPV guises is approaching the fag end of its product life cycle. The chances of Renault India considering this model for an India launch are indeed very bleak taking that fact into consideration.
Internationally the Grand Scenic comes with a choice of 4 petrol and diesel engines. These include a 1.2 liter turbo and a 1.6 liter VTVT petrol power plant with 115 and 110 bhp respectively. The car is also available with the 1.5 liter dCi unit that does duty in various states of tune on a variety of Renault-Nissan cars in India – including the Micra, Pulse, Scala, Sunny, Duster and Terrano. Internationally, the 1.5-liter diesel engine on the Gand Scenic produces a very healthy 110 bhp of power. There is another, more powerful, 1.6-liter diesel engine available with 130bhp of power on tap.
The Scenic is a proper seven seater MPV with features such as sliding and reclining middle row and folding seats for maximum usage of in-cabin space. The space in the third row isn’t generous, but with its flexibility it can lug seven in reasonable comfort for short to medium distances. While the chances of this ageing vehicle getting launched in India are extremely low, if introduced, we expect the car to cost somewhere between 12 to 15 lakh, sitting slightly below the high-priced, yet hot selling Innova, which hasn’t seen a worthy competitor during its reign spanning over 10 years.
