It has emerged that popular German sportscar maker Porsche might be busy with the development of a new turbocharged flat-four engine. The new engine would power the upcoming crop of entry level sportscars from Porsche.

It may be noted that Porsche hasn’t come up with a four-cylinder engine in decades and the upcoming motor might be a great development by the famous car maker.

The upcoming 4 cylinder engine is being expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2014 and would have an all-aluminum engine construction. The motor might be based on the Porsche 3.8-liter flat-six motor that powers the Carrera S. The engine is likely to benefit from Porsche’s Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), VarioCam Plus and a turbocharger. The motor would displace 2.5-liters and would have more than 350 bhp of power and 360 pound-feet of torque along with having redline at 7,500 rpm. The engine is being expected to come mated to a seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) gearbox, which would be tuned to help the driver take advantage of the engine’s low-end torque. A traditional six-speed manual gearbox might also be offered.
