Is Piaggio MP3 Hybrid scooter coming to India?

Scooters in India are the most basic form of commute that usually come in the 100-125cc category. No matter how much we appreciate the current product line-up in the Indian market, we do want to see the premium products that are found in the European markets. And with the rise in number of global manufacturers in the country, we expect more powerful and premium products to enter the Indian market soon. One player that is rumored to make way in the Indian market is the Italian scooter manufacturer, Piaggio. India’s import and export data website, Zauba.com, suggests that Piaggio has imported a MP3 Hybrid 125 scooter in India for R&D testing and evaluation purpose.

First introduced in 2006, this three-wheeled scooter from the Italian manufacturer is powered by a combination of a petrol and electric motor. The plug-in hybrid comes with a 125cc petrol engine along with a 3.5 Hp electric motor. The combined power output, from the petrol and electric motor, stands at 17.5 bhp.

The unit imported for R&D purposes costs Rs 540,999. The final price, with the addition of various taxes will place this scooter in a much premium segment. We are not sure if the Indian audience will accept a 125cc scooter, although hybrid, at such premium price tag. We feel that it’s the three-wheel setup which will be the USP for the scooter and a more logical option, according to us, is the 250cc variant of this three-wheel scooter which will grab attention of the touring enthusiasts in the country.
