Auto Express reports that there’s a new Hyundai in the works, an i20 based compact SUV that’s going to rival the Nissan Juke. The model is due to hit European markets 18 months from now, and the report also includes a speculative render (above) and spy images (refer gallery) of the same. As spy images have pointed out, the styling could take cues from the Hyundai Intrado concept from 2014, with the brand’s new ‘Cascading Grille’ characterising the front fascia.

While the compact SUV will be based on the current i20’s platform, power could come from the recently unveiled i30‘s arsenal – a range of small-displacement, four-cylinder, turbo charged petrol and diesel engines. These include the new 1.0- and 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engines, along with a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine available in three states of tune. The name of the upcoming compact SUV is yet to be finalised, but Hyundai has already registered the ix45, ix55, ix15, ix25 and ix30 names.

Upon launch in the second half of 2017, the compact SUV will rival the likes of the big-selling Juke, Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008. However, it remains to be seen if Hyundai gets the i20 based SUV to India or not, as development of the Carlino, an India specific, sub-4 meter sub-compact SUV is on in full swing. Maybe in 2018, Hyundai India might bring in the new compact SUV to create a new niche between the Carlino and the Creta.
