Someone was nutty enough to shoe-horn a KTM 390 Duke’s engine in a Royal Enfield Himalayan

It seems some folks are just tired of waiting for the KTM 390 Adventure. So they went ahead and built one themselves. One crazy petrol head has created this even crazier fusion of Royal Enfield and KTM. This is a Royal Enfield Himalayan that, instead of its stock carburetor motor, now draws power from a KTM 390 Duke’s engine. This fusion has been talked about on several online channels but we finally came across an actual example courtesy images from TeamBHP member “Barcalad”.

It’s not just the engine that this Himalayan borrows from the Indo-Austrian pocket rocket. The stock multi-function display (with a compass) from India’s first home brewed adventure tourer has been replaced by the all digital unit from the KTM. The switchgear and LED turn indicators too have been borrowed from KTM. The after-market, massive rear sprocket would chop off some top speed, but it would improve the low-end grunt for those mud-plugging shenanigans.

However, we’re sceptical about the Himalayan’s stock chassis’s ability to handle the KTM engine’s heady 44 hp of power against the RE’s humble 25 hp. It’s also not clear about the transmission specifics of the Frankenstein build, but we’ll go out on a limb and say that it employs the KTM’s six-speed job as well. Even the whereabouts of this modifications are yet unknown. How much would it cost? Quite a bomb unless you can source just the KTM 390 Duke’s motor.

  1. Lots of you guys have an issue with the Himalayan chassey …. Which is designed with two aspects namely comfort and handling …. Now the ktm motor has definately less vibrations which will do no harm to the chassey ….. Acceleration and power will not pose a threat to it as some of you have pointed out ….. Looking at the torque figures I’d feel safe to say that the power supplied to the rear wheel( which in my understanding drives the bike) will be around the same so what is all the fuss about the Himalayan chassey…
Ive had da opportunity to ride the Himalayan not in tarmac but off road and my thoughts were ” good bike ….lacs power ” Now u have it ….good job ….maybe RE should supply them with KTM motors …
