Bavarian auto maker BMW,  along with its M division, plans to launch a total of five new models in 2014.

The first of these upcoming five BMW SUVs will be the production version of the X4, that will debut at the New York motor show in April.

Test mules of the production spec BMW X4 have been spied testing on various occasions and for all we know, it would be to the BMW X3 what the bigger BMW X6 is to the BMW X5. Basically, the BMW X6 is a re-skinned X5 but yet, is pricier. The X6 is aimed at those who might want to try a bit too hard to make a statement and in the process, won’t mind sacrificing a bit on the practicality quotient. Akin to the X6, the upcoming X4 will be aimed at people who require flamboyance out of their SUVs. The X4 is based on the X3 and will look very close to the 2014 X4 Concept, which we saw earlier this year.

Engines options haven’t yet been disclosed but since it is based on the X3, we expect the engines to be carried over. All this means that the base trim X4 20d will be powered by the 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine, which will have a max power rating of 180 bhp. The X4 30d will be available with the 3.0 litre straight six, outputting 254 bhp. Also, the X4 will be available with rear-wheel and xDrive options.

What do you have to say? Would the upcoming 2015 BMW X4, which would be a shrunken X6, repeat the success story of the original coupe crossover?
