Mercedes-Benz S500 Coupe to get 9G-TRONIC option from January 2015

So, you have a motorcycle that has a six-speed transmission. That’s cute. Mercedes-Benz S500 Coupe will get NINE!

Last week we reported about Mercedes E350 BlueTEC getting the company’s first 9-Speed Automatic Gearbox, 9G-TRONIC. Now, new reports suggest that the next model from the German carmaker in queue to receiver the 9-Speed Automatic Gearbox will be the S-Class Coupe.

Concept S-Class Coupe

The S-Class Coupe Concept that was showcased for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year will allegedly receive the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission. Powering the S-Class Coupe will be a 4.7-litre V8 engine that would produce 448bhp and 700Nm of torque. The power will be transmitted to the rear wheels via the new 9-speed automatic transmission.

The 9G-TRONIC gearbox is lighter than the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic unit and can work with RWD and 4MATIC layouts as well as in plug-in hybrid and full hybrid cars. Even though it has two more gears, it has just about the same size as the seven-speed transmission and can handle up to 1,000 Nm of torque. The 9G-Tronic is also capable of skipping “several gears” when needed.

Mercedes Benz says that more gears incorporated with broader gear ratio spread would help increasing the drive comfort and significantly enhance the conversion of engine power into traction.

The other vehicles scheduled to receive the 9G-TRONIC gearbox is the company’s CLS family which comprise of CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC or CLS 500.
