Land Rover will be assembled in India

The expensive dream of owning a Land Rover SUV just got a tad cheaper! Tata Motors has announced its decision to assemble few of the variants from the iconic British automobile brand in India. Currently all the variants offered here, namely the Freelander 2, Discovery 4 and Range Rover are being imported as fully built-up units.

Land Rover Freelander 2

According to news reports, the Freelander 2 will be the first variant of the Land Rover range to be assembled in India. It will be brought to India as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units. While the other two variants are not likely to be assembled here in the near future. It is also being reported that the Freelander 2 will be assembled at Tata’s plant located in Pimpri at Pune which was earlier home to Mercedes Benz.

The Land Rover Freelander 2 currently sports an ex-showroom price tag of around Rs.33.5 lakhs in Delhi. It’s competitors on our soil include Audi’s Q5 and BMW’s X3. As of now, it is the cheapest Land Rover on sale in India. Owing to the local assembly its price will fall by a couple of lakhs of rupees as Tata Motors won’t have to pay pay the 110% duty levied on fully built-up units. It will be a win-win situation for the company as well as aspiring Land Rover owners!
