Kia GT five-door coupe greenlit for production; launch in 2016

Back at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Kia had us in a spot of awe with their svelte GT four-door coupe. Coming from a brand which call their cars with names like C’eed, the stunning, swoopy GT was taken with a pinch of salt. Now having established themselves with the flagship K900, which incidentally was the first Kia to be sold in the US with a V8 and rear-drive and, they have decided to take on the likes of the Audi A7 and the Porsche Panamera with their new, upcoming GT.

Admittedly, the Kia GT’s pricing would undercut it’s posh competitors by a fair margin and prime focus would be on the US market for now, with a diesel variant for Europe to maybe follow later. In concept form, the GT sports a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 making 389 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque and routes power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The production GT would also lose a few fancy bits from the concept, like the suicide doors and some of the cool bodywork. But it’ll be a Korean stunner when it hits the production lines sometime in 2016. Rumors of a Shooting Brake, as well as a coupe variant are afloat- but only time will render these true.
