Is Bajaj planning a smaller capacity Cruiser Sport (CS) motorcycle?

Bajaj Auto surprised everyone with the introduction of its 400cc Cruiser Sport (CS) motorcycle, tagged and displayed as the CS400, at the 2014 Auto Expo in Delhi. While we are eagerly awaiting the 375cc duo to hit the Indian roads, Bajaj may have bigger plans (of smaller cubic capacity) for its Pulsar brand. There is a good possibility that Bajaj may repeat the history and go down the path that it chose for the SS400. Bajaj revealed a lower capacity variant of the SS400 named as the RS200 early this year and now, Eric Vas, President of Bajaj Auto’s motorcycle business has sown the seeds for a lower capacity CS motorcycle.

Speaking about the CS motorcycle segment and company’s product strategy, Eric Vas said, “Cruiser is a very interesting segment to be in and certainly it is one area we are looking at. I don’t want to specify what form it will take, what cubic capacity it will take. That’s because of our assessment of the market. Just like we showed a faired version of the 400cc Pulsar and we launched the 200cc variant. But yes, certainly we are looking at the cruiser sports (CS) segment and it is one way of growing the market.”

The Pulsar CS400 is expected to be feature packed with the addition of up-side down telescopic front suspension, ABS and tank mounted instrument cluster

While Vas said that the Indian two-wheeler manufacturer has still not decided the engine displacement of the upcoming CS motorcycle citing market assessment, he did hint towards the product strategy of the Pulsar SS400 and RS200. The motorcycles showcased at the 2014 auto expo, the SS400 and CS400, shared the same 375cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled, fuel injected engine and we believe that the smaller siblings of the aforementioned variants are likely to follow the same strategy. While Vas did not comment about the nomenclature of this upcoming motorcycle, there is a good possibility that Bajaj would name this relatively lower capacity CS motorcycle as the CS200.

Going by this logic, we expect to see Bajaj Pulsar RS200’s 199.5cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled engine on the upcoming CS200 motorcycle as well. The engine on the RS200 is capable of delivering a healthy 25.3 PS of power and 19.2Nm of torque. Using the same engine on both, the RS200 and CS200, would result in lower production cost and will help Bajaj price the upcoming product competitively.

Earlier reports suggest that Bajaj plans to introduce the CS400 in the FY2015-16. Now if Bajaj does go down the SS400 and RS200 road and apply the same strategy on the CS400 and CS200 motorcycle, it would not be completely incorrect to expect to see the CS200 in Indian showrooms in this Financial Year. Pricing will be a crucial factor and Bajaj should work towards introducing the CS200 in the same price bracket as the RS200.

  1. I dont think it will be a good idea to launch 200CS/CS200 cz 200NS is there already in the segment from Bajaj and If they launch 200CS it will be cannibalism.

People who want a faired bike, they have 200NS and people preferring long distance touring/cruising they have 200AS. So why do you need a 200CS in between ?

Between 200AS and 200NS, there are differences, but between 200NS and 200CS, the difference would actually be very little.

  2. Hi Kishore, there is no conclusive information about the launch of the motorcycle. Is there any specific reason why you prefer the NS150 over the currently available AS150?

  3. Any idea on Launch of Pulsar 150 NS??
Have been waiting for the same..its been months that they have been rumors about launch but nothing seems to be happening..??
Any insider news about the same??
