The gap between the premium hatchbacks and entry level SUVs is grabbing a lot of attention. This segment, named as the crossover, forms a list of cars that are designed to be used for everyday city drives along with occasional weekend trips into the wild where the trails form the roads. Hyundai’s i20 Active is the latest participant in the segment as it joins the race against the Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Polo Cross and the Fiat Avventura.

In terms of power, although the Volkswagen Cross Polo has got the biggest engine at 1498cc, it’s the Fiat Avventura that scores the top spot in terms of power output at 94PS. The Volkswagen Cross Polo shares the second spot with new Hyundai i20 Active with its 90PS output figure. The Toyota Etios Cross comes in last with a power output figure of 68PS.

The torque output figures put the Volkswagen Cross Polo at the top spot with 230Nm. The new Hyundai i20 Active comes in a close second with 220Nm of torque. The Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross finish on third and fourth spot with 197Nm and 170Nm respectively. The Hyundai i20 Active benefits from a six-speed gearbox while the other three receive five-speed unit.

The Toyota Etios Cross is the most fuel efficient crossover in this competition. The new Hyundai finishes on second spot with 21.19 kmpl. The third and fourth place are taken by Fiat Avventura and Volkswagen Cross Polo with 20.50 and 20.14 kmpl respectively.

Fiat Avventura (7)

In terms of petrol powered variants, the Toyota Etios Cross is the most powerful crossover with a power output of 90 PS and peak torque figure of 132Nm. The Fiat Avventura ties with the Toyota Etios Cross in terms of power but falls behind in the torque output figure. The new Hyundai i20 Active finishes in the third position with 83 PS of power and 115Nm of torque. The Volkswagen Cross Polo has the least power output figure at 75PS of power and 110Nm of torque.

The new Hyundai is the most fuel efficient car in the petrol powered variants with 17.19 kilometers to a litre of petrol. The Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen Cross Polo finish second and third with 16.78 and 16.47 kmpl. The Fiat Avventura finishes last with 14.40 kmpl.

The Toyota Etios Cross is the most affordable crossover among the four with prices ranging between Rs 6.23-7.72 lakh. The new Hyundai i20 Active is the second most affordable car with price range of Rs 6.38-8.89 lakh. The Volkswagen Cross Polo and Fiat Avventura are priced at Rs 6.49-8.38 lakh and Rs 6.44-8.49 lakh respectively.

  1. The torque figure of avventura is incorrect. It has 210NM torque and not 197 as mentioned.
    Also, in terms of a crossover feel only avventura looks the part, and elite can just pass, but its shocking that polo cross and etios cross with such low GC are even in the reckoning. What is shocking is that etios cross has sold quite well!

  2. Except the Avventura, and to some extent the i20 Active, All of these are hatchbacks with body kits for the “feel good” Indian customer who wants an “SUV-looking”vehicle. The Avventura is the only real bad-road king, that can claim some SUV-like behaviour. I am totally surprised you have not mentioned it at all.
