Honda might launch a Maruti Alto rival in India

Honda Cars India has tasted considerable success with its Brio hatchback. The Brio is the smallest Honda car on sale in India and is also the only hatchback in Honda Cars India’s product portfolio. The hatchback will soon get an oil burner and hence, future seems even brighter for the little car from Honda.

Now, it has emerged that Honda is close to commence development of a small car which will be positioned below the Honda Brio. The upcoming Honda small car would be an A segment car that would take the fight straight to the very popular Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon. It may be noted that the Alto is the highest selling car in India and has been flying out of dealerships. The Honda hatchback would be competitively priced in the very price sensitive segment.

It isn’t yet known if Honda would develop a new car specifically for India or would bring one of its kei car to us. Mr. Hironori Kanayama, president & CEO of Honda Cars India said: “We are studying the market… (but) we do not have such a small engine, except for the Japanese market where we have the 660cc Kei cars. The taste of the Japanese customer and the Indian customer is totally different (and) so we cannot bring that models (Kei cars) into India.”

Honda is investing a sum of INR 2,500 Crores to expand its production operations in India and would be seen stressing on heavy localization to price the car very competitively.
